I like both but they are really different versions of the same story.
They changed the characters alot in the movie and left out alot of the filler back ground.

You should read the Hobbit first.
Lotrs Second.
Then work your way through the Silmarilan.
Then get the Children of Hurin.
Then get the rest to fill in the gaps to finish the story.

I cant stand Legolas the suffer beach boy who can do anything. Some of those scenes were so overdone and no elf is going to outdrink a dwarf.
