The Hunt for Gollum update: Jamie Dornan to play Aragorn

Director Andy Serkis confirmed on the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast that Viggo Mortensen is supportive of Jamie Dornan taking over the role of Aragorn in the upcoming film The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. Serkis said he’ll hold off on detailed casting discussion for now, but added that the team is “absolutely thrilled” about Dornan — and that Mortensen is happy with the news.

Serkis will also reprise his motion‑capture performance as Gollum, the role he first brought to life in Peter Jackson’s original trilogy and again in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. Dornan will play Strider — Aragorn, leader of the Northern Dúnedain Rangers.

Warner Bros. and New Line formally announced the cast at CinemaCon earlier this month. The story follows Aragorn and Gandalf as they search for Gollum to learn more about Bilbo’s ring, which is revealed to be the One Ring central to the later Lord of the Rings events. The film sits between the Hobbit films and the original trilogy in the Middle‑earth timeline.

Several original trilogy actors return: Ian McKellen as Gandalf and Elijah Wood as Frodo. Lee Pace also returns as the elf Thranduil. New additions include Kate Winslet as Marigol and Leo Woodall as Halvard, another Dúnadan who joins Strider on the hunt.

Serkis described Gollum as one of Tolkien’s most complex characters and said the film is a more intimate, psychological exploration that justifies revisiting Middle‑earth with both returning cast and new faces.

Original trilogy screenwriters Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens are back, joined by Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou on the screenplay. The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is scheduled for theatrical release on December 17, 2027.
