McKellen Eager for Gandalf Return, If Time Allows
August 3, 2024
Ian McKellen spoke about playing Gandalf again. He loves the role from the Lord of the Rings movies. Now, a new film called The Hunt for Gollum might happen. Fans think Gandalf could be in it.
McKellen told The Times he heard Gandalf will appear. But he said there’s no script or offer yet. The 85-year-old actor would do it if he’s still alive.
He thinks about his age a lot now. He often wonders if each new job will be his last. McKellen looks at his address book to remind himself he’s mortal: “If you want to know that you are mortal, you just have to look at your address book. And so when a script comes through, or the hint of an offer, you think, ‘This might be my last job. No. I’m not doing that.’”
McKellen keeps busy. He acts on stage now too. He plays a character named Falstaff in a play called Player Kings. Likewise, he likes to do different kinds of acting.
The new movie might show Gollum’s past. It could tell his story before the main Lord of the Rings tale. Fans hope to see Gandalf and other familiar faces.
Serkis, who will direct the film, said of the news: “Yesssss, Precious. The time has come once more to venture into the unknown with my dear friends, the extraordinary and incomparable guardians of Middle Earth Peter, Fran and Philippa. With Mike and Pam, and the Warner Bros team on the quest as well, alongside WETA and our filmmaking family in New Zealand. It’s just all too delicious.”
Meanwhile, Jackson and his fellow producers, Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, added: “It is an honour and a privilege to travel back to Middle-earth with our good friend and collaborator, Andy Serkis, who has unfinished business with that Stinker – Gollum!”
Warner Bros wants to make more Lord of the Rings movies in the next ten years. Fans are eager to see what comes next in Middle-earth. The Lord of the Rings books are very popular. Many people love the world J.R.R. Tolkien created. They want to see more of it on screen.
